Church Plant Update

Thanks to so many of you who have been praying for the new church plant in another of the neighborhoods here in Ixtapaluca, an area called “Palmas 1.”

We were back in our rented building yesterday, after having to find a different place to meet on our second Sunday due to a previous commitment at the building.

We thank God for our four Word of Life Mexico students who are coming to support the ministry here every weekend. Most of the ministry team had a commitment in Puebla on Saturday (Esteban and Ivana’s wedding, lots of fun!), but Saturday ministries happened anyway, with 18 kids at the Saturday kids club (11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.), and about the same amount of young people attending youth group Saturday evening (5-8 p.m.).

Attendance on Sunday’s has hovered between 25-30 people, with new visitors every Sunday. One of these Sundays everyone who has come once is going to be there! The cool thing is that there are a number of complete families in attendance.  Below, a picture of a kids participation in the service yesterday. Yes, we have a cartoon ambient in the building we’re renting!

Of course, a lot more happens in a given weekend…we celebrated friend Alan’s birthday (Alan also played guitar for the first time in the service on Sunday).

We were privileged to attend Esteban (Stevie) and Ivana’s wedding in Puebla this past Sunday, and wish them the best! We were in charge of giving them a Bible as part of the ceremony (a tradition in Christian weddings here), and I (Rod) gave the charge to the couple.

Also on Saturday, Jonathan Garcia had his closing ceremony of his third 8-week soccer league, this one in Jesús María. Jonathan and other young people received training the beginning of this year from Mark Palma and Mike Contreras, and are using materials in Spanish from UW Sports Ministry. It’s amazing how successful this outreach has been, with an average of 25-30 kids participating in the league. (Thanks for the pic, Jon).
