Teaching English all day

Posted in

I returned to our house around 1:15 p.m. today, after teaching 6 (or was it 7?) English classes to 7th, 8th and 9th graders, at a Jr. Hi school very close to where we live. In every class but 1, I recognized at least one student from our neighborhood, either from church, from my English classes here or from just knowing them from seeing them on the street.

The 10 groups of Jr. Hi students (4 groups of 7th graders, 3 groups of 8th grades and 3 groups of 9th graders) are all working on Christmas Carols, to be presented the first or second week of December. Mayra and I, along with Jim and Shari Cottrill, will be among the distinguished panel of judges.

Gaining and maintaining access in public schools (each class has at least 50 students–can you imagine!!) is key to being able to involve interns and other visitors in these schools, and obviously keeps a door open for Christian witness.

This afternoon I have my weekly English classes at 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., in two different neighborhoods. We are also beginning to teach these classes Christmas carols and a simple Christmas play (in English of course) to be presented at our first big event in Jesus Maria, December 11.
