What Are Your “Core Values?”

We just completed a 15-week study on the church’s doctrinal statement, and are now transitioning into a series on the church’s core values. Here they are! Talking about #1 on Sunday. (Documento en español abajo)

1. LOVE: Love is our principle value. When someone visits a Sendero church, they will experience an environment of acceptance, friendliness and support. Very related with the concept of love is the word “grace.” Grace is an attitude of humility, gentleness and generosity.

Colossians 3:12-14 describes this attitude like this: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

The love towards God and towards our neighbor is the first and second commandment. We may err in our administration, style of worship, organization of finances and methodology, but we will not fail in showing the love of God to those that attend church.

2. GOOD NEWS and GOOD WORKS: The gospel, which says that there is no condemnation in Jesus Christ, is very good news for the human being. Although the message of God implies that there is bad news, very bad news (we are condemned because of our sins), our message is fundamentally positive. God loves you, extravagantly; God has shown this love for you on the cross of Calvary.

Understanding and accepting this message, our purpose is to live a life of good deeds, our hearts full of gratitude for the immense love of God. The good deeds describe, for the most part, our lives of disciple. We live so that our good deeds give glory to the father (Mat 5: 13-16).

3. CHRISTIAN LIBERTY: We always seek to maintain a posture of freedom, avoiding at all costs legalism on one side and cheap grace on the other. We preach principles and precepts, not a list of “yes’s” and “no’s.” We seek that each believer be able to think for him/herself, being guided by the Word of God and the council of the brothers and sisters.  We want mature disciples, not conforming and ignorant soldiers. We seek lives of holiness, but also a life that can have impact on its environment, not removing ourselves from this world, retreating to a Christian subculture that quickly becomes sub-Christian.

  1. HOLISTIC, INTEGRATED OUTREACH: If faith only is valuable on Sundays, it’s worth very little. We seek to give testimony of the love of God in creative and un-creative ways, in special and common ways, using diverse means and activities to extend the kingdom of God and see growth and discipleship in His church, every day of the week.

 5. TOTAL INVOLVEMENT: The church does not belong to a group of select few which are especially gifted to do ministry. The church is all of us, and each one has a special place and a responsibility to be effective in their ministry. We do not focus solely on the “gifts” mentioned in the Bible, but we encourage the brothers to do what they know, what they like to do, to invest their lives in whichever accepted Biblical way to minister to His church and in that way, to their God.

Valores Sobresalientes

¿Qué distingue a Sendero de Vida de otras iglesias cristianas?

Queremos discípulos maduros, no soldados conformistas e ignorantes.
