Wheelchairs!

I finally got word mid-week last week that I could deposit funds for 30 wheelchairs and go pick them up. Murphy’s Law was, of course, in effect. The only day to pick them up was Friday. Friday afternoon. And the warehouse where they were stored…the whole way across Mexico City in another city called Toluca. Beautiful. Everyone knows Friday traffic is the worst.

But co-worker Jim and I made it, driving our two vans, and thanks to Google Maps pretty much drove straight to the warehouse, making it in around 3 1/2 hours or so. We packed 22 boxes of un-assembled wheelchairs in the trusty Chevrolet Astro, and 8 in the Dodge Journey.  In maneuvering the Astro in the narrow streets in front of the warehouse, oops, the front right wheel fell in a ditch. Keep forgetting it’s not a 4×4. But some burnt rubber, help from a local and some sweat later, the Astro was free. Oh, the stories that van could tell! We finally arrived home around 10 p.m.

The chairs will be used in an evangelistic wheelchair event we have scheduled for Friday, June 17, in conjunction with a visit from Mt. Calvary Church. We’re excited that we could get the chairs in time!

  1. Hi! I have been looking for an opportunity to help with wheelchairs/mobility devices! Do you have a need for assistance?
