Xochimilco…and field corn

Posted in

So we went to Xochimilco today, which is sort of, well, let’s just say that it’s a quaint place that you really need to see if you come to Mexico City.

You hire a boat for about $17 an hour, and get poled around pristine rivers…er…ah, well, rather opaque water. On the water, you can buy flowers, hire mariachi bands for a song for 50 pesos, and buy elotes, of course. Elote is corn-on-the-cob Mexican style, smothered in mayonnaise, covered with grated cheese and sprinkled with red powdered chili. It’s field corn, by the way. Not sure why sweet corn doesn’t exist here, but it doesn’t.

We had a great time, as always. Here’s some pictures, most notably Kyle tasting an elote.
